Mexico City, Mexico | Typology: Stadiums | Year: 2023 | Area: 60,000 m2
The Azteca Stadium is on the verge of becoming the only stadium in the world to have hosted and inaugurated three World Cup tournaments throughout history. This stadium is considered one of the most emblematic in the world. However, to rightfully host the Mexico-USA-Canada World Cup and comply with FIFA's new regulations, the stadium will need to undergo a profound renovation that even contemplates an urban regeneration complex. We have decided to propose an innovative facade and a new, lighter roof, along with a redesign of the stands that includes the replacement of seats and the installation of enormous panoramic digital screens.
The exterior design of the stadium is inspired by eagle feathers, the most representative national symbol, emblem of power in the Aztec culture, and mascot of the America Eagles, the stadium's local team. Similarly, these "feathers," linked together, form an interweaving that, when viewed from a distance, can be likened to the shape of a bird's nest. A sort of biomimicry that represents what the stadium is for the local team, the famous "nest of the Club America Eagles." Finally, if we analyze the "scales" that form the feathers of the complex's facade, we can also discover the similarity it presents with the scales of a snake or dragon, a direct metaphor to the god Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent. As you can see, the facade takes a profound meaning when we analyze both Aztec and national symbols, as well as the sporting symbols of Club America. The renovation proposal for the Azteca Stadium is a proposal that represents both the past, the present, and the future of Mexico, honoring our ancestors and exalting our national symbols. A legacy that transcends generations, eras, and disciplines in a single place.
